    Go, Christie, Go!

It's official: Former Mt. Pleasant First Lady and Former Iowa First Lady, and former literacy educator and ongoing champion for literacy Christie Vilsack is going to run for a seat in the US House of Representatives in Iowa's new 4th District. Isn't it time Iowa sent a woman to Congress? And wouldn't it be great if it were Mt. Pleasant's very own Christie Vilsack? Candidate Vilsack, we are rooting for you.

Second Annual Harvest Rally and Fall Fundraiser a Success

Once again in the fall of 2011 we came together as Democrats to hear from our leaders, share fellowship, and recommit ourselves to our values and to ongoing civic engagement, especially as the 2012 elections near. We heard from inspiring Iowa Democrats, including our headliner Tom Vilsack, former Mt. Pleasant mayor and Iowa governor, now United States Secretary of Agriculture. Joining him on the stage were past candidate for state secretary of agriculture Francis Thicke, our loyal and longtime friend Iowa Senator Gene Fraise, and our loyal and not-yet-as-longtime friend US Representative Dave Loebsack. To ensure that the congressman will be our longtime advocate in Washington,, we donated a portion of the picnic proceeds to his reelection campaign. And we were excited also to support the candidacy of congressional candidate Christie Vilsack, who is always a welcome guest in her hometown. Next year's Fall Fundraiser will again take place at Museum B on the Midwest Old Threshers grounds in Mt. Pleasant, on Saturday, September 29. We'll post details here as the program develops. Please join us in making this event a tradition in Henry County! This picnic and rally will take place from 4-6 pm Saturday, October 8, at Museum B on the Midwest Old Threshers grounds in Mt. Pleasant. We are especially happy that US Secretary of Agriculture and former Mt. Pleasant Mayor (not to mention governor of our great state and state legislator, too) Tom Vilsack will address the crowd. We modeled our fall event on the summer picnics then-Governor Vilsack used to host at the Old Threshers grounds, so he is a most welcome guest for the fall event. As is US Representative Dave Loebsack, one of the best, most stalwart progressive champions in the US Congress (which needs all the stalwart progressive champions, not to mention intellectuals, it can get these days). We have the additional privilege of anticipating comments from environmental activist Harry Braun and past candidate for Iowa secretary of agriculture Francis Thicke, our neighbor from Jefferson County and always an interesting and inspiring speaker. And we will warmly welcome State Senator Gene Fraise, our neighbor from Lee County and a friend to all Iowans for many years. Plus, some of our own county leaders will take the stage. We'll have picnic fare for a great price -- $10 for adults or $4 for kids 4-14. If you're taking in one of the several local evening events on Saturday, let us cook for you beforehand and enjoy spending time with your neighbors celebrating the value of community and our shared commitment to keeping it strong. Be there! Keep visiting this site for announcements of additonal 2011-12 events. Meanwhile, scroll down the center of the page to review some postings from late last year.

The following posting was entered to our Henry County Democrats web-site when Tom served as Governor of Iowa and Christie as Iowa's First Lady.

“Proud to be a Henry County Democrat.” Our red t-shirts from our early days as Henry County activists are faded, but the feeling still motivates us as we go about the work of serving as governor and first lady of Iowa. Henry County Democrats have taught us that the small can be mighty, that the underdog can prevail. Henry County Democrats have taught us that politics can be fun. We welcome everyone who wants to join us as we work for issues that improve the lives of Iowa’s working families.

  Your Vote Matters

Kudos to the 97 souls who turned out on caucus night, January 3, to support our president and our principles as Democrats. An extra nod -- and thank you -- to those who volunteered to serve on committees and/or to GOTV.
